ABOUT THE ROLE
As an Apprentice Electrician with BC Hydro, you’ll receive paid on-the-job training while learning to install, operate, diagnose, and repair electrical systems in generating stations and substations.
This is a full-time apprenticeship (37.5 hours per week) offering an hourly rate of $35.95, increasing as you progress through the program. You’ll gain valuable hands-on experience working outdoors, at heights, in confined spaces, and in various weather conditions.
This role requires relocating to several BC locations during the 4-year program to ensure comprehensive learning across different work environments.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
As an Apprentice Electrician, you will:
- Learn to install, operate, diagnose, and repair electrical equipment
- Follow safe work procedures across generating stations and substations
- Use tools, diagnostic equipment, and industrial machinery safely and effectively
- Operate and repair software-driven electrical controls
- Collect diagnostic information and analyze data to solve complex problems
- Work at heights, in confined spaces, and in varying weather conditions
- Support the restoration of electrical power for customers during outages

EQUIPMENT & WORK ENVIRONMENT
You’ll work with:

REQUIREMENTS
To qualify, you must have:
Education
- Grade 12 graduation including:
- English 12
- Pre-Calculus 11
- Physics 11
OR equivalent college/university-level courses
- Official/unofficial transcripts required
Licenses
- Valid Class 5 BC driver’s licence (or equivalent from another province)
- Clean driving record; must be maintained throughout employment
Skills & Qualities
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Physically capable and in good health
- Normal color vision, hearing, and sufficient strength
- Ability to analyze data and solve problems logically
- Proficiency with computers
- Familiarity with industrial tools and safety procedures (asset)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Other Requirements
- Must complete physical testing
- Must pass pre-employment drug & alcohol testing (safety-sensitive position)
- Willingness to relocate to multiple BC locations during apprenticeship

PROGRAM DETAILS
- Duration: 48 months
- Training: On-the-job experience + 10 weeks of school per year
- Rotations: Must relocate to 3–4 BC locations (e.g., Vancouver Island, Lower Mainland, Prince George, Terrace, Kamloops, Mica Creek, Fort St. John, Hudson’s Hope)
- Progression: Must maintain satisfactory performance in both training and schooling

In the last 6 months of the program, apprentices may apply for Electrician positions across BC Hydro.
If not selected, BC Hydro will place graduates into available electrician vacancies.
